Monthly Competition Results

The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

The final round in 2013 of our monthly print competition took place on Thursday 17th October. Our guest judge was Colin Douglas ARPS, AFIAP, DPAGB, BPE 4* who is the official photographer at Liverpool St. Helens RUFC and is from St Helens.

The theme this month was Candid / Street Photography and after an initial run through Colin agreed that all the prints were within the subject matter, but some “only just” fitted the Theme.

There were 13 prints by 13 authors, and Colin held six of them back for further review during scoring. Colin awarded two of these with 18 points: “Rue Rambuteau, Paris” by Phil Durkin and “Cross Street” by Judy Bell.  Judge Colin said that “Rue Rambuteau, Paris” had “good movement” and a “lovely blank sky” and “good lighting”, while he described “Cross Street” as having “good movement in some people while some were static” and it was “a good evening shot”

Two prints scored 19 points: “A Face with a Tale to Tell” by Peter Thomasson and “Now the World is at my Fingertips” by David Hawkins. “A Face with a Tale to Tell” had “good lightened shadows so we can see the eyes”, but he felt “the top left corner needed to be darkened a touch.” “Now the World is at my Fingertips” was "a classic street photograph”, and was “well observed and well printed.” Colin also felt the close crop worked very well.

In top place with 20 points were “Beneath the Streets of London” by Paul Longden and “Scoot Jump” by Paul Baybut. “Beneath the Streets of London” has a good lead in and Colin felt the group of people was “rather small but very colourful.” “Scoot Jump” was “a good pose” and “well caught.” Colin thought this was “a great black and white image.”
