Monthly Competition Results

The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

The final round of Print Competition for this year took place on Thursday 18th October. Our guest judge was Simon Ray LRPS BPE1* from Lytham St Anne’s, and he used a scoring method that ranged from 12 to 20 points as he felt a wider band gives a better separation. A total of 22 prints were entered, and eight were held back during scoring.

Third place and 18 points went to “Boat House at Pooley Bridge, Ullswater” by Peter Maddock. Judge Simon said this was “ a cracking black and white print with enough detail.” There were good lead-ins and a natural sky with good depth and toning.”

Second place and 19 points went to “Going or Gold” by Paul Baybut, described as “a very good effect that took time to set up and create.” He particularly liked the effect on the models hand.

First place and 20 points went to “The Sapling and the Tree” by David Hawkins, which Simon said was “well thought out and had very good detail throughout.” It was “a good composition” and “very intriguing.”

Here are the results and judges comments of the top three Advanced Class images in the Print Competition. The full statistics can be viewed by opening the attached PDF file below. Any member wanting to see all the scores and Oliver's comments should consult the competition binder on display at the Club.
