Monthly Competition Results

The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

Thursday 20 September saw our fifth and final round of our monthly projected image competition of 2012. Our guest judge was Gwynn Robinson FRPS PAGB from Preston Camera Club, who said he looks for “the three C’s” in an image: Clarity, the sense of purpose and execution, Communication of the idea or thought, and the Connection with him to the image.

During an initial run through of all 40 images in the Advanced section Gwynn make bullet point notes and then on the next run through he gave us his comments and thoughts and gave each image a score out of twenty. After seeing all the images Gwynn said “Wow! What a fantastic variation. There are some fantastic images here.”

A total of six images were held back for further consideration, and third place and 18 points eventually went to “Teazel” by Don Isherwood. Judge Gwynn said “Wow” it looks 400 feet tall. It has great lighting and I can’t fault it.”

Second place and 19 points went to “Modern Valencia” by Phi Durkin, which judge Gwynn said had “wonderful colours” and was “superb” and “well taken.”

The full 20 points and first place was awarded to “Peacock Tree Frog” by Richard Towell. Judge Gwynn said "this jumped out at us and is really superb." He explained that “two catch lights in the eye on a portrait picture does not usually work, but it does here.”

Here are the results and judges comments of the top three Beginners images in the Projected Digital Image Competition. The scores can be viewed by opening the attached PDF file below. In addition, any member wanting to know their individual scores and comments should consult the Competition binder on display at the Club.
