Monthly Competition Results

The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

Our fourth projected image competition this year took place on Thursday 19th July with guest judge Mike Davis from Rochdale Photographic Society.

There were 25 PDI in the Advanced section, and Mike admitted he would be strict on the marking as his job of scoring was made difficult be the quality of the images.

Twelve images were initially held back, and then four of these were scored, leaving a final eight for Mike to consider. Mike said that all of these final images were “very good.”

In third place with 19 points was “Flight of the Eagle” by Paul Baybut, which judge Mike acknowledged was a “super shot of the eagle” and the author had “done really well to catch it in focus.” Mike added that “the tree in the background makes the head and talons stand out.”

In second place with 19½ points was “A Mobile Girl” by Jeff Layer. Judge Mike said the author had done “an excellent job in picking her out and it was beautifully caught.” He liked the way her “upturned face catches the light well and we can see all her fingers, but her left hand is missing.”

The winner with the full 20 points was “Olivia” by Rob Wigley. Judge Mike said this was “a superb portrait” and liked “the smooth texture on her face” and its “good soft colour,” and “the way her hair frames her face.”

Here are the results and judges comments of the top three Advanced Class images in the Projected Competition. The scores can be viewed by opening the attached PDF file below. Any member wanting to see all the scores should consult the competition binder on display at the Club.
