Monthly Competition Results

The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

Our fourth projected image competition this year took place on Thursday 19th July with guest judge Mike Davis from Rochdale Photographic Society.

After the first run through of the Beginners projected images Mike said, “Wow, they are all very good” and considered them to be a “superb set” of images. He admitted he would have to be fairly critical to separate them and would take a few out initially to end up with the top three. There were 32 images in the Beginners section, and Mike scored twenty of them to leave twelve for further consideration. Mike then scored a further five were scored, leaving seven for his final choice.

All the final seven images were of a high standard, and presented judge Mike with a difficult task to come up with the top three.

In third place with 19 points was “Belle” by Philip Durkin, and judge Mike said this portrait had captured a good expression and had good balance. He explained that in portrait photography it is important to capture all of the models hand, or no hand at all as fingers can often become missing if not all clearly in the image. This image had made the models hand appear elegant.

In second place with 19½ points was “”Stitched Up” by Paul Longden, which judge Mike said was “simple, but well seen and well put together.” He liked the image and in particular the way it had been pulled together and “the good use of colour and background.”

The winner with 20 points was “Pollen Collector” by Peter Thomasson. This was “stunning” and Mike appreciated it required “a lot of patience not only to capture the bee but also the target flower.” It was “well cropped and has the bee coming into the frame.”

Here are the results and judges comments of the top three Beginners images in the Projected Digital Image Competition. The scores can be viewed by opening the attached PDF file below. In addition, any member wanting to know their individual scores and comments should consult the Competition binder on display at the Club.
