Monthly Competition Results

The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

Our fourth Print competition of 2011 took place on Thursday 18 August and was judged by Diana Magor AFIAP LRPS BPE2* from the Hoylake Photographic Society. A total of 85 prints were presented to her on the night, and she gave constructive comments and scores on each one.

By her own admission she likes Natural History images but does not like trains, but does not let her personal opinions stop her seeing an image for what it is, regardless of the subject. Diana also likes a good title that is appropriate to the image.

There were a total of 38 prints in the Beginners competition, and having seen all the prints before the start of the evening Diana was impressed with the overall quality of the beginners’ images. She said that she would expect some members to rise to the advanced class soon.

No less than eight were held back during scoring, and the top spot and 20 points were awarded to Paul Baybut for “The Sorceress” which Diana described as “creative.” She also said “it works well in mono” and “the lady looks evil- she looks the part” and had “lovely detail in the lace garment.”

Second place and 19 points also went to Paul Baybut for “Bee on Allium” which Diana said had “superb detail in the flower and bee” and was “very sharp” and “looked superb from a distance”.

Third place with 18 points was awarded to Andrew McArthur for “Waiting for a Plane” which Judge Diana said was “Dark and gloomy” and the "glow on the floor and curve of the window worked well” Diana also appreciated the “great shapes of the seats and window.”

Here are the results and judges comments of the top three beginners images in the Print Competition. The full statistics can be viewed by opening the attached PDF file below. In addition, any member wanting to know their individual scores should consult the Competition binder on display at the Club.
