Bolton Camera Club

Thursday 19^th January saw our monthly competitions start a new season, with guest judge Tony Duffey CAPGB being presented with an incredible 123 projected digital images. There were 42 images in the Advanced Class, 48 in the Beginners Class and an amazing 33 in the Themed Competition.

The Advanced winner was “Spotted Flycatcher” by Adrian Drummond-Hill, described by Tony as “superb” and “pin sharp with a great background,” adding it was “very well taken.”

The Winner in the Beginners Class was “The Night Watchman at Formby” by Philip Durkin, which judge Tony said was “very well handled.”  Tony liked the unusual angle with the sun behind the statue, and pointed out the detail in both the sand and the sky. Tony was impressed that there was no glare, and said this image was “very well done.”

The Themed Competition was on the subject of “Shapes” and was won by new member Richard Towell with “Tail Curl.” Judge Tony said this “lovely picture” was “well spotted,” and was “interesting” and a “superb image of a perfect spiral.”

Our Day Out competition took place on Thursday 5^th January with judge David Bibby AFIAP BPE3* from HASSRA Fylde PS. Twenty seven projected images and nineteen prints were shown and after much deliberation the winner was Eric Grindle’s print “The Champion.” David described it as "good quality and pin sharp" and "it captures the face and expression very well"

Our annual quiz night took place on Thursday 15th December, and was our last meeting before the Christmas break. Our very own Gordon and Pat had set 75 questions to tax our minds, and they covered a wide range of subjects apart from photography. Such is the success of this event that this year saw the largest turnout of our members and their partners at a quiz night, and there was only just enough hot pot supper to be divided out!

Everyone present enjoyed the fun evening, and as teams were created randomly new friendships were made.

At the Prestwich Co-op Camera Club Knockout Competition this club proudly finished in a very credible third place, with "Rufous Bush Robin" by Adrian Drummond-Hill being awarded third place as best image on the night. Click here to read the review and see all the results.

For many years, thanks to the generosity of the staff of Mathers Camera Shop, Market Street, Bolton, the Camera Club has exhibited the work of club members. The exhibition is changed on a regular basis and a new set of images can now be viewed.

Many of the images on display are by newly signed up members of the club, some of whom are new to photography but are producing first class work. Why not pop into Mathers and see if you can spot the novices!

We are grateful for the help given to us both by Mathers and by Ian at St Georges Glass on Halliwell Road, Bolton, who has yet again supplied the glass for our exhibition frames.

You don't have to be an expert to join Bolton Camera Club, photographers of every skill and experience are welcome. You can find out more about the club and its activities on this website, or better still, why not come and visit us on Thursday evenings.
